MBA Polymers plant achieves certification

Multinational plastics recycling company MBA Polymers has met the international standards of EuCertPlast for its plant in Austria. It is among the first post-consumer plastics recyclers in Europe to achieve this certification, which is backed by the European Commission under its Eco-Innovation program.

The innovative plant, operational since 2006, uses waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) as its raw material source to produce high quality post-consumer ABS, HIPS, and PP plastic resins. Many of the end-of-life consumer products it recycles require UL, RoHS and REACH certifications.

With a capacity of 40,000 tons per year, covering an area of nearly 20,000 m², the plant is one of the most advanced in the world. By achieving EUCertPlast certification, the plant has demonstrated good practice, quality of input and output, transparency, as well as the traceability and conformity of recycled plastics it produces.

“Many of our customers require very stringent environmental procedures these days and this certification sets the standard for these types of procedures and shows our customers that we are operating correctly”, explained MBA Polymers Chief Executive Nigel Hunton.

The Austrian plant, which started commercial operations in Q2 2006, is one of four operational MBA Polymer plants. MBA Polymers, which prides itself on saving between 1 and 3 tons of greenhouse gas production for every ton of virgin plastic it replaces, has three other operational plants in China, US and UK.
